What Should You Actually Wear to a Portrait Session

Prioritize fit and comfort over trends

Wear clothes that fit well without pulling or gaping. Avoid large logos, busy patterns, or anything that distracts from your face. If you're uncomfortable in what you're wearing, that tension shows in photos. Choose colors that feel natural to you and complement your skin tone, jewel tones and earth tones photograph well for most people.

Dress for the purpose

Headshots typically call for solid colors and minimal accessories to keep focus on your face. Family portraits work better with coordinated (not matching) outfits that reflect your actual style. Corporate portraits should match your workplace environment, what you'd normally wear to work. Ask your photographer what's typical for your session type.

Plan layering and grooming

Bring a backup shirt if you're unsure. Avoid wrinkled clothing and spend extra time on hair and skin the day before. For headshots especially, consider a professional makeup touch, up if that's normal for your industry. Wear what makes you feel confident, your attitude in photos matters more than the outfit itself.
