How Should You Prepare for a Headshot Session

Plan your appearance strategically

Headshots focus entirely on your face and shoulders, so grooming matters. Get a haircut or style your hair the way you normally wear it professionally. If you wear makeup, apply it as you would for work (slightly heavier than daily is normal for photography). For men, shave or trim facial hair the morning of the shoot. Bring multiple shirt or jacket options in solid colors, you'll want variety for different uses.

Know what you need the headshots for

Ask your photographer what the standard usage is (LinkedIn, casting, corporate website, etc.) because this affects framing and styling. Different industries expect different looks. A tech company headshot differs from an actor's headshot or lawyer's portrait. Clarify before shooting so your photographer frames accordingly.

Arrive rested and on time

Headshot sessions are short (usually 30, 60 minutes), so you have limited time to relax in front of the camera. Get adequate sleep the night before to avoid puffy eyes and tired expressions. Arrive 5, 10 minutes early so you can settle in. Avoid heavy meals right before and skip excessive caffeine, you want to feel calm, not jittery.
